The Department of Violence Prevention is hosting a 2-part series for DVP Violence Interrupter and Gender Based Violence grantees.

DVP will share their vision for a cross-collaboration approach and responding to all forms of violence at the intersections to create healing and safety for families and communities. There will be opportunities to share and learn with other peers as well as interactive practical

Part 1: Executive Directors and Program Managers

Part 2: Frontline and Direct Practice Staff

Date: May 18th, 2023

  • This interactive session will present the DVP’s cross-strategy team model and focus on learning and creating shared language and understanding, as well as opportunities to learn and apply best practices and tools to real-life scenarios.


Family Partnerships 2- Part Series will be taught by organizational consultant Dr. Carole McKindley-Alvarez. This series will provide an introduction to Family Systems and cover the following topics:

  • Practices to build your client’s network of support and family relationships

  • How to create a genogram to map your clients’ family relationships and history

  • Circular questioning and stages of change techniques to help you to support your client wherever they are at

Dr. Carole McKindley-Alvarez is an organizational consultant for non-profit, for-profit, and governmental agencies providing organizational needs assessments, DEI services, retreat and meeting facilitation, and executive coaching. She has been an executive and consultant for over 20 years and has created and provided numerous trainings, seminars, and workshops on cross-cultural awareness, education, and the impact of violence on families and communities both locally and nationally. Her areas of expertise are family, community, and gender violence, cross-cultural studies, working with the aging population, and psychological assessment.

The Department of Violence Prevention is pleased to invite you to participate in a one day in-person Introduction to Life Coaching training. At the training you will get a taste of foundational life coaching skills such as creating a life coaching stance, asking powerful questions and fostering levels of listening.

This training is ideal for people who are new to life coaching (i.e. those who have not completed the Life Coaching Certification Fellowship or attended previous Life Coaching trainings)

Leslie Avant-Brown is the CEO and Principal of Blooming Willow Coaching, a culturally relevant, healing-centered coaching practice that allows her to partner with thousands of individuals and organizations seeking to impact change. She is a long-time innovator, facilitator, coach, and thought leader within movement work. Her cutting-edge, community-centered approach to coaching is award winning and recognized for its innovative design and ability to support culture change. Leslie leads the Blooming Willow Conductor’s Coaching program and partners with the DVP each year to support service providers from the network to obtain their coaching certification. Leslie was a long-time Oaklander and is a native of Detroit. In her free time, she enjoys finding new adventures, spending time with her wife, belly laughing, eating delicious food, and creating!


Fall 2022

The Department of Violence Prevention is pleased to invite you to participate in a one day in-person Introduction to Life Coaching training on February 9th, 2023, from 9:00am to 4:00pm.  At the training you will get a taste of foundational life coaching skills such as creating a life coaching stance, asking powerful questions and fostering levels of listening.

An additional practicum will be offered to participants who complete the series and want to dive deeper into applying the practices learned during the series.

Healing Centered Coaching to Reclaim Family will be taught by Blooming Willow Coaching CEO Leslie Avant-Brown. Participants will learn about and apply healing-centered life coaching skills and practices to reclaim family. Trainings will focus on practical application, modeling, and feedback and cover the following topics: Shifting from “I” to “We”, Asking Powerful Questions, Practicing Engaged Listening, and Calling Forward Community Power - Coaching Mindset.
