The Department of Violence Prevention offers comprehensive training and technical assistance to its network of grantees for the 2020-2021 grant year. Below is a list of trainings that were provided for Management and Direct Service Personnel during this time.


DEPARTMENT OF VIOLENCE PREVENTION ALL GRANTEE KICK-OFF MEETING

SUPPORTING CLIENT SAFETY LEARNING SERIES

The Department of Violence Prevention is pleased to offer the network a fall virtual learning series focused on supporting client safety. The Supporting Client Safety Learning Series consists of two trainings designed to help clients navigate crisis, anger, and trauma and move towards healing and stability. These are open to all DVP grantees (formerly Oakland Unite) from all strategies.

Date: Thursdays September 17 and 24, 2020 Location: Online Time: 10:00am-12:00pm Trainer: Tatiana Chaterji

Course Description This 2-part virtual training will provide an overview of techniques to employ with community members and clients in high-stress situations involving anger, escalated emotions, misunderstanding, and activators.

Participants will engage in an on-line learning laboratory to explore common conflict scenarios and apply effective speaking and listening skills to de-escalate tension and allow all parties to feel seen and heard. Participants will strengthen their muscles in managing interpersonal dynamics that can - without care, skill, and attention - erupt into difficult or dangerous situations.

Joining the training on the computer will provide full access to the training and is strongly recommended.

Tatiana Chaterji is a facilitator, trainer, youth organizer, circle-keeper and educator working at the crossroads of incarceration, intergenerational trauma and structural violence. With over a decade of work in schools, communities, and prisons, she integrates multi-disciplinary approaches to peacebuilding. Her specific areas of expertise include community-based conflict mediation, transformative justice, restorative justice, youth development, participatory action research, and coaching.

Date: Fridays October 16 and 23, 2020 Location: Online Time: 1:00pm-4:00pm Trainer: Summer Krause

Course Description This 2-part virtual training will introduce participants to Seeking Safety- an evidence-based model that supports clients in attaining safety, healing, and recovery. It has been widely used to support survivors of trauma and addiction through concrete strategies that build skills and increase hope.

Designed to be highly flexible, Seeking Safety can be utilized in any setting, with individuals, or groups, and can be delivered by a range of providers including frontline workers, case managers, life coaches, and peers. By the end of the training, participants will be prepared to implement Seeking Safety in their work with clients.

Joining the training on the computer will provide full access to the training and is strongly recommended.

Summer Krause is a licensed professional counselor and certified alcohol and drug counselor III with a clinical practice. She utilizes Seeking Safety with adolescent and adults one on one and in group settings. She spent many years working with systems involved and incarcerated youth and specializes in supporting clients healing from trauma, grief, and addiction.


HEALING STRATEGIES FOR SURVIVORS OF GENDER BASED VIOLENCE LEARNING SERIES

Date: Monday & Tuesday November 9 & 10, 2020 Location: Online Time: 10:00am-2:30pm Trainer: Candice Norcott *This training is only open to DVP’s GBV strategy

Course Description This 2-part virtual training will introduce participants to Healing Trauma- an evidence-based model that supports survivors of gender-based violence in attaining healing and recovery.  It has been designed for and widely used to support survivors of abuse within settings that require a short intervention including domestic violence agencies and sexual assault service organizations. Healing Trauma can be delivered by a range of providers including frontline workers, case managers, life coaches, and peers.  By the end of the training, participants will be prepared to implement Healing Trauma in their work with clients.

The training will cover the process of trauma, the five core values of trauma-informed services, power and abuse, triggers, grounding, self-soothing, and building healthy relationships.

Joining the training on the computer will provide full access to the training and is required.

Candice Norcott, Ph.D. is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist at the University of Chicago in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience where she is an Assistant Professor, national consultant, and public speaker. Candice’s work encompasses providing trauma-informed, reproductive health services to adolescent girls and young women.  She was also recently appointed as the Director of Graduate Medical Education for the University of Chicago. Candice speaks internationally on issues related to trauma, gender and race.

In response to high interest among GBV providers in the Healing Trauma model, the Department of Violence Prevention is pleased to offer implementation supports for organizations who would like to facilitate this model with their clients. The learning community will consist of an Introductory Session, a one-on-one session with each participating agency, and 2 additional group sessions.

The Department of Violence Prevention is hosting a community town hall on ending gender-based violence. This community convening will support the Department of Violence Prevention, grantees, and community stakeholders in accessing and building the knowledge, language, mindsets, and partnerships needed to engage in the critical work necessary to move culture change, community healing, safety, and justice. The convening will include a panel discussion with local leaders working within the movement to end gender-based violence and provide services to survivors and presentations from national thought leaders, Richie Reseda and Andrea Ritchie. The Department of Violence Prevention is hosting a second community town hall on ending gender-based violence. This community convening will support the Department of Violence Prevention, grantees, and community stakeholders in accessing and building the knowledge, language, mindsets, and partnerships needed to engage in the critical work necessary to move culture change, community healing, safety, and justice. 

This convening will include discussion about local prevalence and strategies, direct service provider perspectives, and community centered breakout group discussion.

The Department of Violence Prevention is hosting a third community town hall on ending gender-based violence. This community convening will support the Department of Violence Prevention, grantees, and community stakeholders in accessing and building the knowledge, language, and mindsets needed to engage in the critical work necessary for culture change, community healing, safety and justice.

This convening will focus on deepening our collective understanding about commercial sexual exploitation and will include a community discussion about prevalence, root causes and risk factors, and best practices in prevention, intervention and response. Speakers will include network providers and nationally renowned human trafficking expert and advocate, Nola Brantley.
