DEEPENING FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS CONVENING

The City of Oakland’s Department of Violence Prevention is committed to strategic, collaborative action and investments that work to prevent, intervene in, and respond to community violence and increase community safety and healing. Our upcoming Convening will focus on the importance of partnering with families to keep our clients safe and healthy. We understand that a socially just and culturally relevant approach to our work must recognize and combat historic and systemic efforts to weaken Black and Brown families.

During the Convening, we will discuss our developing family- centered framework with the goal of increasing our collective capacities to integrate a family partnership approach to our work with community.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Carole McKindley-Alvarez is an organizational consultant for non-profit, for-profit, and governmental agencies providing organizational needs assessments, DEI services, retreat and meeting facilitation, and executive coaching. She has been an executive and consultant for over 20 years and has created and provided numerous trainings, seminars, and workshops on cross-cultural awareness, education, and the impact of violence on families and communities both locally and nationally. Her areas of expertise are family, community, and gender violence, cross-cultural studies, working with the aging population, and psychological assessment.

Part 2: Healing Centered Coaching to Reclaim Family with Leslie Avant-Brown Date: Wednesday, April 27th, 2022 Time: 11:00am-1:00pm Location: Online

Our upcoming virtual training series- Deepening Family Partnerships will focus on the importance of partnering with families to keep our clients safe and healthy. We understand that a socially just and culturally relevant approach to our work must recognize and combat historic and systemic efforts to weaken Black and Brown families. Through a 2-part training series, we will offer tools to support direct service providers in integrating a family partnership approach to client work.

The training series is open to direct service providers working within the DVP network and will focus on building the knowledge, language, and skills needed to engage in culturally relevant, family-centric direct service work for culture change, community healing, safety, and justice.

ABOUT THE Trainers

Leslie Avant-Brown is the CEO and Principal of Blooming Willow Coaching, a culturally relevant, healing-centered coaching practice that allows her to partner with thousands of individuals and organizations seeking to impact change. She is a long-time innovator, facilitator, coach, and thought leader within movement work. Her cutting-edge, community-centered approach to coaching is award winning and recognized for its innovative design and ability to support culture change. Leslie leads the Blooming Willow Conductor’s Coaching program and partners with the DVP each year to support service providers from the network to obtain their coaching certification. Leslie was a long-time Oaklander, is a native of Detroit and recently relocated to Florida. In her free time, she enjoys finding new adventures, spending time with her wife, belly laughing, eating delicious food, and creating!


Male Allyship Certification FELLOWSHIP

To build upon the work that is already underway in bridging gender-based violence and group/gang/gun violence and appreciating the importance of male allyship to ending gender-based violence, the DVP is partnering with Bright Research Group and A Call to Men to offer a Male Allyship Certification Fellowship and inviting a cohort of men committed to deepening their knowledge, strengthening their advocacy, and uplifting the importance of male involvement in efforts to create safer communities for women, girls, and gender expansive people.

This fellowship is by invitation and will be held from April-June 2022.


CONVENING ON ENDING GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE: ALLYSHIP FOR HEALTH & HEALING

Date: January 27th, 2022 Time: 10:00am-2:00pm Location: Online

The DVP’s fourth convening on gender-based violence will focus on the importance of male allyship in the movement to end gender-based violence, highlight the critical work being done by local male advocates and leaders, and support the Department of Violence Prevention, grantees, and community stakeholders in accessing and building the knowledge, language, and mindsets needed to engage in the work necessary for culture change, community healing, safety, and justice.

Our upcoming Grantee Convening will focus on deepening our collective knowledge, supporting our collaborative partnerships, and strengthening our collective capacity to work with community to create a safer, healthier, more equitable Oakland.

COMMUNITY TOWN HALL: DETERMINED TO THRIVE: CREATING A SAFER, HEALTHIER OAKLAND

The Department of Violence Prevention is hosting a community town hall on creating a safer, healthier Oakland. The event will support the Department of Violence Prevention, partner agencies, and community stakeholders engage in the conversations and co-learning necessary to deepen our collective knowledge, strengthen our partnerships, and fortify our commitment to community healing, safety, and justice.
