Virtual Trainings to Support Participants through COVID-19

Oakland Unite’s network of community based providers are critical messengers when it comes to getting the word out about COVID-19 and available resources to support our communities during these unprecedented times.  Now more than ever our network of providers and the participants we serve need access to accurate, understandable and actionable information.

Oakland Unite in partnership with Bright Research Group offered a three part virtual training series for the 2019-2020 grant year. Below is a list of trainings that were provided Below is a list of trainings that were provided for Management and Direct Service Personnel during this time.


Date: Thursday May 28, 2020

Course Description:

This training will provide an overview of the health literacy skills needed to understand and use health-related information. It will cover how health literacy may be impacting people’s responses to COVID-19, and include practical tips and resources for communicating clearly during a public health emergency. Through discussion and interactive, skills focused activities, participants will deepen their health literacy awareness and plain language communication skills, building their capacity to identify and share health and safety information during high risk situations.

Jennifer Pearce is the founder of Plain Language Health, a consultancy specializing in plain language and health literacy. She brings over 20 years of experience collaborating with consumers, providers and professionals to co-produce content and design experiences that are easy to understand and act on.

Course Description:

Our lives are made up of a complex web of relationships that impact our health and well-being. Care mapping is a method for increasing awareness about the important relationships in our lives and can be used by providers and clients to identify and strengthen formal and informal supports. This training provides an overview of the care mapping model used to frame the client’s current supports, self-care capacities, and needs. Participants will learn to use care mapping to support Oakland Unite clients. The class will consist of interactive discussion and a guided care mapping exercise.

After the training, attendees are encouraged to use care mapping with a client and then attend a one-hour follow up session to share feedback, ask questions, and receive coaching from the care mapping training team.

*Joining the training on the computer will provide full access to the training and is strongly recommended.

Materials Needed: Blank paper; colored pencils, markers, or crayons (red, green, yellow preferred, but any three colors will do)

Course Description:

Now more than ever Oakland Unite participants need access to food, health insurance, and income. The Oakland Unite network can help participants through the public health and economic crisis by helping clients navigate public benefits. In this two-part series, learn how to use a Culturally Affirmative Practice approach to partner and serve your participants in understanding, applying and securing benefits administered at the County, State and Federal level with a special focus on worker based programs, and key changes due to COVID-19.

*Participation in both modules is required.

Valerie Edwards is a native of San Francisco with deep experience in the East Bay, and a California LCSW since 1988. Valerie is a psychiatric social worker with over twenty years’ experience in direct service, governance and operations of community based non-profits including oversight of substance abuse, behavioral health, and HIV programs. A focus throughout her career has been developing culturally-based intervention strategies for populations with chronic or complex illnesses, frequent hospitalizations and low treatment adherence. She served on the faculty of UC Berkeley’s School of Social Welfare from 2000-2015. Most recently she served as Director of Social Services at Alameda Health System for Highland and Fairmont hospitals, overseeing the Sexual Assault Response and Recovery Team, the Health Advocates program as well as providing social work leadership across the system.

Rebecca Alvarado is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 18 years of experience as a medical social worker serving in safety net programs throughout Alameda County.  At Care Connect, Rebecca leads program and workforce development, in support of the Consumer and Family Experience goal. Prior to joining Care Connect, Rebecca  played a critical role in the Care Management department for several hospital-based programs within Alameda Health System, the County’s safety- net hospital. She possesses expertise in serving the undocumented, clinical case management, SDOH, and cross-sector collaboration. 

Care Connect Fellows: The Alameda County Care Connect Fellowship is a nine month learning experience and leadership development program. The depth and breadth of the Fellows’ lived experience uniquely positions them as consultants to Care Connect with the goal of improving health care for all.
